Fundamental Modal Phenomena on Isotropic and Anisotropic Planar Slab Dielectric Waveguides

چکیده
The characteristic interactions of discrete modes supported by planar isotropic and anisotropic dielectric slab waveguides are analyzed using singularity and critical point theory, leading to a rigorous and complete explanation of all modal interactions. Complex frequency-plane singularities associated with modes on isotropic waveguides are identified and discussed, and the absence of mode coupling is proven. For an anisotropic planar waveguide having an arbitrarily oriented optical axis, it is shown that mode coupling is controlled by the presence of an isolated Morse critical point (MCP) accompanied by a pair of complex-conjugate frequency-plane branch points. The interaction of space-wave leaky modes on a grounded anisotropic slab is studied by investigating the evolution of complex frequency-plane branch point singularities as the orientation of the optical axis varies. The general theory is presented, and numerical results are provided for some specific waveguides.

Eigenmodes of index-modulated layers with lateral PMLs
Maxwell equations are solved in a layer comprising a finite number of homogeneous isotropic dielectric regions ended by anisotropic perfectly matched layers (PMLs). The boundary-value problem is solved and the dispersion relation inside the PML is derived. The general expression of the eigenvalues equation for an arbitrary number of regions in each layer is obtained, and both polarization modes...
متن کاملModal formulation for index-modulated layers with lateral PMLs
The modal formalism is developed to deal with index-modulated structures ended by anisotropic regions (perfectly matched layers, PML). The method is applicable to scattering problems from dielectric or metallic objects as well as to propagation in planar slab waveguides. The boundaryvalue problem is solved and the dispersion relation inside the PML is derived. The general expression of the eige...

We apply a numerical method for calculating the field distribution in the region immediately behind the input facet of a dielectric step-index single-mode slab waveguide. The input waves considered are focused plane waves and Gaussian beams of various diameters, with and without misalignment. The figures obtained show the formation of radiation modes and the development of the fundamental guide...

In this paper, characteristic dispersion phenomena and interactions of the discrete surfaceand leaky-wave modes supported by a grounded biased-ferrite slab waveguide are analyzed using singularity and critical-point theory. Surfaceand space-wave leaky modes are studied for different orientations of the applied magnetic bias field. As the bias field is rotated away from a coordinate axis, the mo...

Utilizing the underlying physics of evanescent-wave amplification by a negative-refractive-index slab, it is shown that evanescent waves with specific spatial frequencies can also be amplified without any reflection simply by two dielectric planar waveguides. The simple configuration allows one to take advantage of the high resolution limit of a high-refractive-index material without contact wi...
